So you’ve just become engaged…CONGRATULATIONS!
Whenever I meet couples, one of the things they always say to me is…
“We’ve never done this before, what should we ask?”.
And it’s true. Not many people know what to ask when booking their wedding photographer, so I thought I’d put together a list of some things I believe are “must haves” when booking a wedding photographer.
In an unregulated industry, it’s hard for people to decipher who’s a professional photographer & who’s an amateur with a fancy camera. Look for this logoWhat this logo means is your photographer’s work has been assessed by a panel of experts in the industry & they have been deemed of professional standard. This also means they must run a legitimate business with all insurances & business ethics in place. Sure, there are fabulous photographers who are not members of the AIPP but looking for this logo is the quickest way to know that your photographer is an actual professional & will produce quality work for your special day.
As with all things in life, we all have budgets. And I get it, I really do, but please don’t let money be the only factor when choosing your photographer. Most professionals are highly skilled in the wedding industry, run a legitimate business & have all the expenses that go with it. We spend tens of thousands of dollars on equipment. Our experience with weddings which will help you on your wedding day is invaluable. We structure our pricing on our business model. Wedding photography is an investment. You will have these photos forever. If you can book a cheap photographer, what are you really getting? It’s likely you’re getting a hobbyist who knows little about working with the elements, lighting, posing, organising people on limited time or even shooting in manual mode. They most likely won’t have any back-up equipment for emergencies. You may luck-out & actually like your photos but I’ve heard plenty of stories of disappointment. There are no ‘do-overs’ for your wedding. And remember, it’s not a ‘great price’ if the end result are poor quality photos that you can’t bear to look at.
LOVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER! Well at least like them a whole lot! We get to spend the whole day with you so you need to make sure your going to have fun! And not every photographer/client relationship is the right fit. So sit down, pick up the phone, have a chat & get to know each other before the day. I’ve had clients who call me & after a 2 hour marathon conversation of laughter & wedding banter, were more than happy to book me. Connection is important so find a photographer who feels like a friend.
There are no stupid questions. Ask anything & everything! We are there to make your day run as smoothly as possible. That means you can tell us all about your family dynamics, your special requests for photos, photos that you don’t want & the ones you simply must. We are there to work for you so your day is amazing. Don’t be afraid ask.
Know what you’re getting
Always ask what’s included. Many photographers have different ways of designing their wedding packages & collections. I give my clients EVERYTHING! All their wedding images from the day on a USB. No limits, no restrictions. I like simplicity. There are many alternatives so please make sure you know what you’re getting so there’s no surprises.
That’s all. On the wedding day, enjoy yourself. And if you choose your photographer wisely, they will help you with that too.
If you’re looking for a wedding photographer I’d love to hear from you 🙂
